The way we search for homes has changed—and not for the better.

Gone are the days when you could browse listings, find the perfect place, and forward it to your realtor without a hitch. Today, every click you make on big home search sites like Zillow or Realtor.com is being tracked, packaged, and sold to the highest bidder.

Here’s how to take back control.

The Problem: Your Info Is the Product

Home search platforms aren’t really "free." Their real business model? Selling you.

• Enter your email or phone number? Expect endless calls and emails.

• Credit pulled by a lender? Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion sell that info as "trigger leads."

• You become a lead, not a buyer.

This creates chaos, stress, and unnecessary noise in the already overwhelming home buying process.

Why Opting In Isn't Necessary

You don’t need to hand over your contact info just to search for properties. Most of these platforms give you access to incredible search tools—but only after you enter your data.

There’s a smarter way to use them.

How to Browse Listings Without Getting Tracked

Here’s how to navigate the system like a pro:

1. Don’t Opt In

Search freely, but avoid filling in any contact forms. Use the platform's tools without giving up your info.

2. Use Incognito Mode

• On Chrome, right-click and select "New Incognito Window."

• This resets the site's tracking cookies.

• Once they limit your searches, close the window and open a new one.

This gives you unlimited, untracked browsing sessions.

3. Keep Track of Listings Your Way

• Save links in a notes app or spreadsheet.

• Or better yet: use AI. Tools like ChatGPT can now help organize and monitor listings based on your preferences.

The Truth: Nobody Uses Their Agent's IDX Site

After 15+ years in this business, here’s the cold, hard truth:

Not one client has ever sent me a listing from their agent’s website. Not one.

Everyone uses Zillow, Realtor.com, or another popular platform.
